CO Detector Aralia Avenue - 90 PPM March 17, 2005 - At 0749 hours, Station 7 was dispatched to Aralia Avenue for a CO detector sounding. Squad 7 arrived on location to find both occupants out of the house with all of the windows in the house opened up. The homeowner stated that she had also shut off the heating oil by the emergency shut off switch. The Squad crew donned SCBA's and went in to close all of the windows, turned the heating oil back on, and turned the heat up. While the crew waited a few minutes before re-entry, an odor of smoke was noticed coming from the rear of the house. The crew went back in checking upstairs and downstairs with a multi-gas meter for abnormal level. Upon descending to basement the meter started alerted at 35 PPM and climbed to as high as 90 PPM around the oil heater unit. Another meter was brought in to check the results and the same was obtained. The crew shut the unit off and ventilated the house. An ambulance was added to the call, which transported two individuals to CMH. Units returned to service at 0840 hours. Units: Squad 7 (FF M. Soroka), Ambulance 79 (EMT Z. Hassay)
